Each time nature shifts her seasons I take time to pause and reflect. Not only do I consider what has happened, but I take this as time to make plans for work and life for the season we’ve just shifted into. A lot of business owners do quarterly planning – this is my version of that. I do it in line with the seasons as a way to connect to nature, and live in tune with it.
Ayurveda tells us that we’re a microcosm of the macrocosm, and I agree. We’re made of the same stuff as the natural world, we’ve lived within it for centuries. It is only relatively recently that we humans have decided to view ourselves as separate to nature. This, I believe is detrimental to our wellbeing and planning in line with the seasons is one small way we can start to address this.
How to do seasonal planning for work and life
First of all, I have to say that the word plan isn’t ideal here but it’s the one that made the most sense. If the past few months have taught us anything it’s surely that the only constant is change, and the best laid plans can go awry. So, I’ve started to think of my seasonal plans more like sketches. An outline of things I’d like to happen, leaving space for life, nature, the universe to collaborate with me on colouring in the picture.
So how do you actually do this seasonal work-life planning or sketching? There’s no right or wrong way, of course there isn’t. What I’ve come up with though are three key areas that I look at, all underpinned by the answer to the question: how do I want to feel this season?
The three key areas I consider
- Energy boosts and drains, boundaries I need to put in place and rules to create in order to protect these.
- Shifts to my daily routine to support seasonal wellbeing and how I want to feel.
- What do I want to do/make happen – yes, you could call these goals.

Really, I encourage you to just go for it. Try not to worry about doing it right, and tune into what feels right for you. I’ve been doing this for three years now, and it’s something I keep refining as I go.
It takes courage
Also remember that it takes courage to show up in a way that’s different from the norm. Stick with your desire to connect to the seasons in this way and honour it, even when you read posts about quarterly planning, sales targets, or year-long life and business plans.
You don’t need loads of time
When I first started with this kind of work I thought I had to do huge lengthy processes. This just led to me not doing anything at all because I didn’t have the time. So, remember this can be as long or short as it needs to be for you. Got 15 minutes to jot down some things you’d love to do in your work and life this season? Great, do that!
Turn it into action
Yes, it’s great to know how we want to feel in the season and what boundaries we want to protect. But how are you actually going to do that? My tip is to write a list of really practical stuff after you’ve done the more feeling into it things. For example, if you want to focus on having fun this Summer you could decide you’re going to arrange to do something with friends twice a month, watch comedy once a week and follow what feels fun in your work.
